RESEARCH OPENINGS

1. Obesity Study

Are you 18 or older? Are you at a normal weight, overweight or obese?

If so, you may qualify for an exciting research opportunity at Alliant International University.

Jill Stoddard, Ph.D., Associate Professor, and her colleagues are investigating the impact of different emotional coping strategies on food cravings and distress. Results of this study may provide a greater understanding of food-related behaviors in adults with concerns about their weight which may inform prevention efforts, treatment development, and treatment improvement for weight problems.

COMMITMENT REQUIRED:

During a one-time, approximately two hour visit to our lab you will:

  • Be weighed and measured to determine your Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Complete several questionnaires that will ask about your mood and experiences and feelings around food and eating
  • Be randomly assigned (i.e., assigned by chance, like flipping a coin) to one of four groups in which you will be taught different ways to handle your emotions in response to a personally painful memory
  • You will be paid $20 for participating.

Testing procedures will include performance-based measures involving personality and emotion, in addition to questionnaires related to unusual experiences and beliefs.

Data will be used to help create a new measurement tool to increase the accuracy of predicting certain psychiatric symptoms in adolescents.

For completing the full study, participants will receive $40 to be given to parents or guardians.
